After the collapse of ancient Egypt, Rome became one of the most influential city states in the known world. It was a world of high ranking officials, business men, gladiators and escorts. We don’t often talk about women’s influence over these powerful men.
In this article we are going to take a look at the influence of escorts and how escorts had more of an influence on ancient Rome than we give them credit for.
Escorts and the Sacred Feminine
Escorts were not prostitutes and were not considered as such at any time in ancient Rome. They had a much higher status and many historians now believe their role was similar to that of what was known as the “Sisterhood” in ancient Egypt.
Many of the most influential Romans seemed to have had an escort or two in their lives. The wife was during this time put on a pedestal, and the truth is that many wives may not even have left their homes. Instead, their husbands often attended official dinners and parties in the company of escorts.
Women, including escorts, were often seen to have the power of perception and increased insights, and were always invited to join in the conversation. Today, we often refer to the Sacred Feminine which is in fact a term which originated in ancient Egypt.
Parties in Rome
A lot has been written about the ancient Romans and they seem to have become famous for their orgies. Escorts do not seem to have played a very vital part in the ceremony of the orgy. Instead, it appears that the party host often contracted prostitutes for the evening’s entertainment.
Accounts have been found of well known Romans contracting girls to come in for the evening to entertain the guests. It is worth to point out that escorts were seen as guests not as companions to have sex with.
Escorts in Ancient Rome
Escorts in ancient Rome were often Roman citizens and were allowed to own their own property. Some of them were also priestesses, or former priestesses. Many of them became incredibly wealthy as a result of their direct links to many rich men.
Wives seem to have accepted escorts, but there are no records indicating that escorts and wives were friends. There is a possibility that they might have been friends or had contact. However, this information is too diffused and unclear for historians to say for certain. On occasion, it does appear escorts could have lived as part of a household.
Traveling and Waring Romans
Rome was, of course, famous for going to war or invading other countries. Don’t think for a minute that many Roman generals went to war on their own. The wife may have stayed at home but escorts often accompanied high ranking military men when they went off to war.
Records have been discovered which clearly indicates most generals did indeed travel with female companions who were not wives nor family.
Wouldn’t it be great if we could have a time machine, so we could travel back to see what life was really like back then. Many historic misconceptions could be cleared up and perhaps we would finally appreciate that life was not that different during ancient times.
